MTS teams up with Nokia to develop 5G in Russia
MOSCOW, May 18 (PRIME) -- Russian mobile operator MTS and Finnish electronics giant Nokia have signed an agreement to cooperate in development of technologies of the fifth generation (5G) connection in Russia, the companies said in a statement Wednesday.
“In view of complexity and a large scale of tasks, which should be tackled while implementing 5G, MTS is working on a plan of its networks evolution. Projects and tests zones, which will be jointly launched by our companies, will help us answer the question of how to meet growing demand in data transfer in a more effective way,” Andrei Ushatsky, MTS’ vice president for technology and IT, said.
The partners will work out a strategic plan to introduce 5G and the Internet of Things (IoT) solutions and will deploy a trial 5G segment at international sports events, which will take place in Russia in 2018.
The companies will also carry out a number of test projects with the use of 4G technologies, including LTE-Advanced Pro, and 5G technologies to ensure high-speed data transfer and a more effective use of the frequency spectrum.
“With development of the IoT, the number of devices linked to networks will hugely outnumber subscribers of connection operators. It tosses certain challenges, but also opens new opportunities for implementation of services and applications,” Vladimir Ulyanov, director for cooperation with MTS at Nokia, said.
In December 2015, MTS signed a similar agreement with Swedish telecom equipment producer Ericsson.
